Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 22 (PTI) The Kerala Cabinet on Wednesday approved the launch of ‘Sidharthan Distress App’ to help prevent riots in educational institutions and facilitate quick lodging of complaints, Chief Minister VD Satheesan said.
The app is named after JS Sidharthan, a 20-year-old veterinary student from Nedumangad, who allegedly committed suicide in February 2024 after being subjected to ill-treatment by his classmates at Pookode College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Wayanad.
Addressing a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, Satheesan said the government has noticed a rise in incidents of irregularities on university campuses.

He said the Cabinet decided to introduce an anti-corruption law in Sidharthan’s name, a decision that had been announced in the UDF manifesto and the revised state budget for 2026-27.
“The government has decided to introduce Sidharthan Distress app so that complaints related to ragging can be quickly communicated to the concerned authorities,” the Chief Minister said.
The revised Kerala Budget for 2026-27, presented last month by the Congress-led UDF government, had proposed the introduction of the app and an anti-ragging law in the name of Sidharthan to curb ragging in educational institutions.
In his budget speech in the Assembly, Satheesan had said, “To prevent irregularity in educational institutions in Kerala, ‘Sidharthan Student Distress App’ will be introduced and an anti-irregularity law will be enacted in the name of Sidharthan to prevent irregularity and ensure the welfare of students.” PTI LGK ROH
