The two Left parties, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), along with the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), hold the key to both the government formation by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor C. Joseph Vijay, and a proposal being considered by the DMK to support the AIADMK in forming a government.
On Thursday (May 7, 2026), DMK president MK Stalin invited CPI(M) State Secretary P. Shanmugam, CPI State Secretary M. Veerapandian and VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan went to his house on Cenotaph Road for talks and broached the idea of an AIADMK government backed by the DMK.
Sources said that while the Left parties informed Stalin that a decision would be taken in their respective state committee meetings scheduled for Friday (May 8), Thirumavalavan indicated that his party would follow the line adopted by the communist parties. The three parties together have six MLAs and their support is seen as crucial to reaching the magic figure of 118 seats needed to form the government.
Meanwhile, a resolution giving the party leader the power to take a decision on the AIADMK’s request for support in forming the government is likely to be adopted at the DMK’s legislative party meeting scheduled for Thursday afternoon. For now, the thinking within the DMK is that it should support such a formation from outside, while its allies would decide whether to join such a coalition government.
