People are ‘living rather than surviving’ due to fear of rising energy bills.

The increase for those on convertible deals comes as higher wholesale costs, faced by suppliers, come through in the bills.

“It’s a juggling act,” Ellison said.

“I’ve run out of food, the car that takes me to work has run out of gas. This is happening constantly.”

According to the National Statistical Office, external66% of adults reported that their cost of living had increased compared to a month earlier, with the most common reasons being the price of food purchases, the price of fuel and gas or electricity bills.

“No matter who you are, your shopping bill has gone up,” said June Devine, who runs a weekly lunch where people can eat at cost price.

“Everything has gone like a rocket.”
