Match preview
Villarreal will arrive at Wednesday’s match on the back of a 1-1 draw with Mallorcawhich extended the team’s unbeaten run in the Spanish top flight to five games, and Marcelino’s team are now in pole position to finish third in the table ahead of Atlético.
The Yellow Submarine is six points ahead of fourth-placed Atlético, with two games remaining, although it is behind Diego Simeone’s team in the history of direct confrontations between the two teams, so there is a scenario in which Atlético is declared third and Villarreal falls to fourth.
However, Villarreal will play in the Champions League again next season, and third place would represent its best campaign since finishing runners-up in 2007-08.
Marcelino’s team has the second best home record in La Liga this season, with 43 points from 17 games and 14 wins in the process.
Earlier this season, Villarreal recorded a 2-1 victory over Sevilla at the Estadio Ramón and have emerged victorious in each of their last four games against Los Nervionenses.

In fact, Sevilla leads the overall record of direct confrontations between the two teams, having achieved 25 victories in their 59 meetings, while Villarreal has achieved 17 victories.
Los Nervionenses have only won one of their last eight games against Villarreal, and will undoubtedly be the underdogs against an impressive Yellow Submarine team.
Luis García’s team comes into this match on the back of successive victories over Real Sociedad and Espanyol, which has significantly increased their chances of remaining in the division.
Sevilla are 13th in the table, just five points behind seventh-placed Getafe, while they are just three points clear of the relegation zone, so there is still a lot of work to do.
García’s team has a difficult end to the campaign: they will host Real Madrid in their next match on May 17 before finishing away at Celta Vigo six days later.
