People across the Chicago area reported feeling the rumblings of an earthquake that struck Lake Michigan off the coast of the northern suburbs Wednesday afternoon.
The magnitude 2.9 earthquake began shaking around 1:40 p.m. CT, approximately 20 kilometers off the coast of Kenilworth, Illinois, according to the Department of the Interior’s U.S. Geological Survey.
By 3:30 p.m., more than 50 people had reported to the USGS that they felt the earthquake. Most reports came from Highland Park, Glencoe and throughout the city of Chicago. Skokie, Libertyville, Wilmette, Evanston and Lincolnwood were also among the many places where people reported feeling the earthquake.
Loves Park and Coal City were the farthest places from where the earthquake occurred and people reported it was felt at 3:30 pm, both over 75 miles away.
More reports are likely to follow.
