A recent revelation about the history of black spider calls into question one of the most popular Spider-Man: New Day theories. Prime Video’s upcoming live-action Spider-Man show is, of course, not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and yet the plan for the series may contain hints for the web-slinger’s next MCU outing.
Despite their many differences, there are already some interesting parallels between Spider-Man: New Day and tombstone. After years of dealing with large-scale threats, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will go back to basics fighting some of his streetwise Marvel Comics villains. He will also deal with the criminal organization known as The Hand, indicating a focus on organized crime, which is also known to play a major role in Spider-Noir story via Silvermane.
There’s also the matter of Tombstone, a major Marvel Comics villain and crime boss who has never appeared in live action. That will change in 2026, when he will appear in not one, but two, live-action Spider-Man projects. After being brought to life by Abraham Poopola as one of the gangsters working for Silvermane, Marvin Jones III will play another version of Tombstone just two months later in new day.
It’s surprising that two interpretations of Tombstone arrive just months apart, but that doesn’t mean there’s no limit to the creative decisions. black spider and new day can share.
Spider-Noir may be adapting Man-Spider, hurting his chances of appearing on Brand New Day
Curiously, both new day and black spider have been subjected to the same fan theory, which is that their main character will transform into Man-Spider, a six-armed monstrous form introduced by Spider-Man: the animated series in the 1990s. In both cases there have been many reasons to suspect that this could happen.
The first trailer for Spider-Noir previewed a deformed figure resembling Nicolas Cage’s Ben Reilly, but with a bald head, a mutated face, and spider-like appendages extending from his body. The image evoked comparisons to Man-Spider, as did talk about a DNA mutation in the Spider-Man: New Day trailer.
Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner told Peter that his DNA was mutating, reminiscent of Dr. Curt Connors’ warning to Peter, who took matters into his own hands and ended up becoming Man-Spider in Spider-Man: the animated series. Rehashing the story in the movie seemed like a real possibility after Spider-Man’s eyes rolled back in the trailer, which is further proof that the changes he’s going through won’t lead to anything good.
But that scenario leading to Man-Spider seems increasingly unlikely, especially after the second Spider-Noir trailer revealed a creature that is either Man-Spider or something very similar to him. He was shown attacking a stranger. With Spider-Noir clearly taking this route, it’s now hard to imagine that Man-Spider is where Brand New Day is headed with its DNA mutation story. Having it happen on TV two months earlier would detract from the impact of seeing Peter Parker go through that.
Spider-Noir is in a better position to make Man-Spider work
That said, Spider-Man: New Day Avoiding Man-Spider wouldn’t be bad news. In fact, if only one of the two projects is going to adapt this version of the character, Spider-Noir has the best chance of doing it justice. Although most strongly associated with a cartoon, Man-Spider is an inherently dark concept, one that would feel at home in Spider-Noir.
Inspired by film noir, the Spider-Man Noir universe is driven by gritty themes and a somber tone. Its atmosphere in the comics has lent itself well to some dark turns on iconic Spider-Man characters and based on what’s been shown so far, it makes sense that black spider will take the same course. If Man-Spider does appear, he promises to be as terrifying and gruesome as you would expect from such a character in live-action.
