getty imagesTikTok’s new US owner has apologized for the “disruption” to users after thousands of problems affected the video-sharing app.
Platform outage monitor DownDetector said it had seen more than 600,000 reports of glitches from US TikTok users over the weekend.
Problems flagged by people include videos appearing intermittently on the “For You” feed, some content not appearing and new posts getting “zero views” — some problems likely to continue on Monday.
TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, which now oversees the platform and its operations in the US, said it was “working to restore our services following a power outage at a US data center that impacted TikTok and other apps we operate”.
“We are working with our data center partner to stabilize our service,” it said in a post on social media platform X.
“We regret this disruption and hope it will be resolved soon.”
TikTok’s US data center partner Oracle declined to comment on the outage.
The cloud computing giant has taken a bigger role in TikTok’s US operations under a deal securing the app’s future in the US that was finalized on Thursday.
These issues led to speculation and concerns that TikTok’s glitches were the result of its new ownership or anticipated changes to the American app’s algorithm.
US TikTok users began reporting issues affecting their TikTok feed and content on Saturday.
Downdetector told the BBC it saw 663,061 reports from US users between Saturday and Monday, some of whom reported a “total outage” on the platform.
DownDetector reports showed a drop on Sunday night, before climbing again on Monday when some TikTok users in the US experienced persistent problems.
TikTok-owned video editing app CapCut also saw thousands of reports of problems from users on DownDetector.

Some also said that the videos they uploaded to the platform did not have as much visibility as they usually did, or were “stuck at zero views”.

As part of President Donald Trump’s deal to allow TikTok to continue operating in the US, Oracle will inspect and retrain a different version of its algorithms for US users.
Cloud giant TikTok is one of three managing investors in USDS Joint Venture LLC, maintaining a 15% stake in the US entity.
It is also responsible for securing US user data more broadly – something it was already overseeing to some extent under an existing security arrangement called Project Texas.
