Supplemental Security Income checks for the month of May are scheduled to be sent out on May 1.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are usually issued on the first day of the month, but sometimes payments are made earlier when the first calendar day of the month is a weekend or holiday. In May, the first day of the month falls on a Friday and payments will be made on May 1, according to the Social Security Administration calendar.

This continues a period of four consecutive months in which SSI checks will be sent out on the first of the month. Then in July, August checks will be sent out early, on Friday, July 31, because August 1 is a Saturday.

What is Supplemental Security Income or SSI?

The Supplemental Security Income program, administered by the Social Security Administration, provides benefits to people with limited or no income or resources, people age 65 or older, and people who are blind or have a qualifying disability. Children with a qualifying disability are also eligible for SSI, according to the SSA website.

Adults who earn more than $2,073 a month from their job generally do not qualify for benefits. According to the agency, nearly 7.4 million Americans currently receive monthly SSI payments and about one-third of SSI recipients also receive Social Security benefits.
