Expert group proposes capping Social Security benefits at $100,000
A Washington think tank proposed capping annual Social Security benefits at $100,000 for couples as a way to reduce a looming shortfall in the retirement trust fund.
People who receive Supplemental Security Income checks will receive their payment on Friday, May 1.
Sometimes payments are made early. It happens when the first falls on a weekend or holiday. Checks are sent on the last business day before the normal shipping date.
Social Security beneficiaries will also receive their regular checks as scheduled in May. Benefits are typically disbursed to nearly 74 million people on Wednesdays at the end of the month. Your payment date depends on the day of the month you were born.
Here’s what you need to know about the May payment schedule, when SSI checks will next be sent out early, and where to find a Social Security office near you in Mississippi.
Social Security payment schedule for May 2026
The Social Security Administration’s 2026 payment schedules are online to help beneficiaries plan their budgets.
Regular Social Security retirement benefits will be issued according to the SSA’s standard payment schedule in May:
- May 13: Dates of birth between the first and the 10th of the month.
- May 20: Dates of birth between the 11th and 20th of the month.
- May 27: Dates of birth between the 21st and 31st of the month.

When will SSI checks be sent out in early 2026?
The next time checks will be sent out early is Friday, July 31. August 1st is a Saturday this year.
SSI checks will also be sent out early in November because the first one is over a weekend.
And the first check of the new year is always sent on New Year’s Eve due to the holiday conflict.
Why do some people get paid 3 times in certain months?
People who receive both SSI and regular Social Security will be paid three times in October and December.
Regular SSI payment will be made on the first day. The Social Security check will be paid on its usual date. Then, SSI funds for the following month will be sent near the end of the month because the next SSI disbursement date falls on a weekend or holiday.

Supplemental Security Income checks will be sent on the following dates in 2026, according to the SSA calendar.
It is generally sent on the first day of the month, but they are disbursed in advance if the first day falls on a weekend or holiday.
- Friday, May 1 (check for May)
- Monday, June 1 (check for June)
- Wednesday, July 1 (check for July)
- Friday, July 31 (consult for August)
- Tuesday, September 1 (see September)
- Thursday, October 1 (see October)
