The death toll from the double earthquake that hit Venezuela on June 24 rises to 3,685. The earthquakes, of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, were the strongest to have affected Venezuela in more than a century. The death toll has risen steadily in recent weeks and an estimated 16,740 people are currently injured. Thousands of people have previously been reported missing after the disaster, but the country’s authorities did not update that figure.
The earthquakes damaged the Simón Bolívar International Airport on the outskirts of the capital, Caracas, affecting air traffic to and from the country. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez said commercial air traffic would be reopened as soon as possible using an alternative runway.
